Family holiday in Burgundy in 2009
In the summer of 2009, the whole family – that is, with both our sons – went on holiday for the last time to beautiful Burgundy in France. For the first week, we’d hired a houseboat, which we used to cruise along the ‘Canal de Bourgogne’ towards the River Yonne, a tributary of the Seine; from the Yonne, we then travelled quite a distance along the ‘Canal du Nivernais’ .
After we’d practised navigating into the locks and mooring carefully in them a few times, the following ritual quickly became established: as soon as the barge was moored, the family had to make sure the boat could cope with the rising or falling water, and the father of the family would swiftly disembark with his monstrous Fujifilm S3 Pro and photograph the various lock-keeper’s cottages, each one more picturesque than the last!
